On the afternoon of August 31, 2016 I represented the HBPA of Alberta in discussions with the Edmonton Mayor and City Council regarding Northlands’ proposal to redevelop their property and discontinue racing operations. Rick LeLacheur represented HRA.
We were able to convey the message that racing needs to continue at Northlands until a new Facility in the Edmonton area is available. Response from the Mayor and Council was very favorable – they were interested in the impact that horse racing has on the city of Edmonton and openly supported continuing racing on the Northlands Park site for the next 2 years.
Mayor Don Iveson made a Motion (to be voted on soon) that included sending a letter to HRA supporting racing at Northlands until a new racetrack is available. This is the outcome we had hoped for- assuming the Mayor’s Motion to continue racing is adopted and pending the outcome of the RFP process to develop a new ‘A’ racetrack in the Edmonton area we will have a Facility to race at in Edmonton for the foreseeable future.
