Tabarnak, Sacre Bleu!
Pierre Trudeau would have called last weekend’s Derby preps a fuddle duddled muddle. Reminds us that this year’s Derby hopefuls are just as unpredictable as last year’s.
With four Kentucky Derby preps and a 3 year old turf race at Keeneland this weekend let’s hope we don’t end up with a maudit fuddle duddled muddle.

What a chaotic mess. But that’s where we are, trapped in a food-fight interlude, during a fire drill, with the lights flickering alarm and Owen Wilson asking directions to the nearest wormhole. Last weekend’s Florida Derby was saved from complete meaninglessness only by the fact that nothing means nothing, and the Louisiana Derby became an instant masterpiece in irony, a million-dollar prep for the Kentucky Derby won by a horse that isn’t even nominated to the Kentucky Derby.

From The Insider

Who do YOU like in the Wood and Santa Anita Derby?
First, a quick reflection on last weekend: Wow, Union Rags got beat, Mark Valeski got beat. A tough weekend to be a favourite. Union Rags was impressive in defeat, rallying on what appeared to be a speed-biased race track. Give him some added distance and he could still be very very tough in the Kentucky Derby. El Padrino was a lackluster fourth, also trying to rally into a soft pace set by the winner Take Charge Indy. Make your own conclusion about the race. Some will say Union Rags has been exposed; others will say he proved that he was the class of his generation.
The Louisiana Derby was bombs away as Hero of Order held on and won at 109-1, way more than he should have been. Mark Valeski was a good second but came back missing a shoe and lame. Whether he will be healthy for the Kentucky Derby is yet to be seen. A second tier California shipper, Rousing Sermon, ran a closing third into what was a pedestrian pace. Hero of Order will probably next appear in a stakes race at Churchill Downs, possibly the Derby Trial or the Matt Winn. He will not make the Kentucky Derby field.
SIZZLING SATURDAY: The Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne and the Santa Anita Derby form the biggest Derby prep weekend of the year. (1) Santa: Creative Cause leads the field. He will be challenged by San Felipe Stakes winner I’ll Have Another, Liaison and Midnight Transfer along with a collection of horses who are trying graded stakes company for the first time. Pick: Play a triactor box on Creative Cause, Midnight Transfer and I’ll Have Another. (2) The Wood Memorial promises to be a duel between Alpha and Gemologist. Pick: Gemologist out of the Todd Pletcher barn looks to be the one who should waltz over this field. Alpha is a gutsy horse but Gemologist has yet to do anything wrong in his short career. Also watch for the lightly raced highly-regarded Street Life as well as My Adonis and Casual Trick. (3) The Illinois Derby will feature Currency Swap, the 2011 Hopeful winner who got crushed by Gemologist last time and Pletcher’s allowance winner, Our Entourage. Swag Daddy, a minor stakes winner at Aqueduct, could ship in and make a run for $500,000 and a spot in the Derby gate. Pick: Currency Swap
OTHER RACES NOT TO MISS SATURDAY: Keeneland’s $500,000 Ashland Stakes for 3-year-old fillies and the $400,000 Carter Handicap for older sprinters at Aqueduct featuring this competitive line-up: Caleb’s Posse (BC Dirt Mile), Shackleford (Preakness), Calibroacha (Tom Fool), Emcee (106 Beyer).
