Sal’s 2017 Holy Bull Preview suddenly surfaced so Sal can pontificate and prognosticate on the Pegasus Premiere.

ESPN – DRF – Hovdey – Gilded stakes don’t always take flight
Sal was wandering if Hovdey is giving us a cryptic clue to his upset horse in the Pegasus as Shaman Ghost’s broodmare sire is Gilded Time.
Gilded Time stood at Bar None Ranches in Alberta for a number of years where two of his sons currently stand: Gayego and Run to Victory.

Edmonton Northlands – Stolte – Edmonton moves to grant further Northlands debt relief
Sal says that wasn’t Edmonton Northlands CEO Tim Reid just in the news the other day whining how Edmonton Northlands would like to get back into the horse racing business in Edmonton. Would Tim Reid and Edmonton Northlands expect the city of Edmonton taxpayers to finance their re-entry foray into the horse racing business so they could mismanage horse racing for another few decades while siphoning off money that should be going towards purses, improving the horse racing industry and maintaining and improving the horse racing infrastructure and using it to subsidize their other mismanaged money-losing projects.

Racing needs to better plan, implement, accept and manage substantial, simplifying change. One example would be a dramatic simplification of North American race conditions.
Who benefits (really, think about it) from a race open to horses which have never won two lifetime races, other than maiden/claiming/starter, or restricted allowance, or have never won three races, or which have not won a race since July 30, or optional claiming price of $62,500?

Bloodhorse – Pedulla – Stronach Still Seeking New Heights for Racing
Love it or hate it, whether it’s a success or a one year fly and die dud the Pegasus World Cup invitational has stirred the upper echelon of thoroughbred racing in North America into action. Just the extra publicity that thoroughbred racing has garnered was well worth the Stronach Group and the 12 investors’ efforts.
From the 2017 cast the World Cup Invitational has about as much global impact as US baseball’s World Series. Sorry Toronto but you’re so wrapped up in your own bloated ego you don’t realize that the rest of Canada doesn’t give a damn if you sink or swim.
Time will tell and will tell rapidly whether or not you’ll have 12 parties as eager to put up the $1 million per entry as they were in 2016.
Sal says that you can count on many of the owners who just ponied up the $600US to nominate to the Triple Crown already having visions of their 3 year old Classic winner in the Pegasus winner’s circle with his Eclipse the background.
Sal says that you can count on many of the owners of thoroughbreds who requite themselves well on the Pegasus undercard already having visions of being in the Pegasus winner’s circle with his Eclipse the background.

Catch the action at the Derby
So, although nine of the 12 slot holders are going to lose a good chunk of money, they knew that was a good possibility going in. If every owner had shunned Stronach’s idea, there would be no Pegasus World Cup, no epic showdown between California Chrome and Arrogate, no columns and stories about the race all over the internet, no TV commercials featuring UFC champion Conor McGregor. All we would have on January 28 is a wide-open edition of the Donn Handicap with no star power and little interest.
It’s easy to knock the Pegasus and the slot owners, and, yes, there are several aspects of the race that need changing, but why not embrace something new and different? If it doesn’t catch on, so be it. You at least will get to see what should be a titanic battle between two spectacular horses. Or maybe you’ll see the upset of the century.
So, let’s just get those three final horses already and let the fun begin.
Bloodhorse – Haskin – The Peculiar, Perplexing Pegasus Puzzle
The first question is whether there should be “standards” at all, or whether the award should go to whatever eligible horse that the voting turf writer considers the best, with that individual voter deciding for himself/herself what those standards should be. If you value horses running, and racing fans do, there is concern over the selection of Arrogate.
The nearly unanimous selection of Arrogate for champion 3-year-old teaches three things. First, a horse can literally earn end-of-the-year championship honors for only two performances in stakes company if they are outstanding enough. Exaggerator won three of the more important Grade Is (and they do range in importance), including the Santa Anita Derby, the Preakness, and the Haskell, yet was resoundingly defeated.
Second, it teaches it doesn’t pay to take chances, run, and lose. Exaggerator narrowly lost the GI Kentucky Derby in an exciting rendition, came in second in the GII San Vincent S. and third in the San Felipe. Exaggerator also threw in a few clunkers, such an 11th in the GI Belmont S., an 11th in the GI Travers S., and a seventh in the GII Pennsylvania Derby. It raises the question whether this is so decidedly inferior a performance as to warrant being deemed lesser to a horse that had two admittedly magnificently historic races, but did not run in any other stakes company all year.

“They haven’t fulfilled the requirements.” Campo said. “They refused to do nasal swab and we haven’t received any paperwork. That’s a non-starter for us. We have to protect the integrity of our backstretch.”
Ron Winchell, who co-owns Gun Runner with Three Chimneys Farm, said he refused the nasal swab test because of advice from his private veterinarian. According to Winchell, Gun Runner’s blood has tested clean for equine herpesvirus.
“They require a blood test and nasal swab. We’re fine with the blood test, because the blood test should cover everything,” Winchell said. “With the nasal swab, our vet recommended not to do that and said there is a 15% chance of false positive.
“If he has a false positive, he has to stand for 30 days on concrete,” Winchell continued, referencing quarantine procedures at Fair Grounds. “That could be harmful to him and his future. Why should we subject our future with Gun Runner to that? It’s a roll of the dice not worth taking.”

According to both Antonacci and Waterhouse, the biggest difference between training and campaigning horses in the United States and Down Under is furosemide (Lasix). The dehydration caused by the bleeder medication is the prime reason Waterhouse said American horses couldn’t keep pace with a training program like hers if they wanted to.
Although Australian Thoroughbreds don’t put in official timed workouts (which is also true in Europe), Waterhouse estimates she might have her horses do speed work similar to a breeze between one and three times per week, depending upon fitness. While European horses spend long periods on either side of their daily work walking, Waterhouse’s horses spend long periods jogging, sometimes up to two miles a day, sometimes over hilly ground. Horses usually go in sets, jogging on a hack on the long route between the barn and the track.
Horses also run back much more quickly, not just at the lower levels (as is sometimes seen in the States) but at all levels. Some of the horses competing in Saturday’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Raceday were wheeling back in less than two weeks, and in many cases, closer to seven or ten days.“It’s a different style,” said Antonacci. “Her horses can withstand a lot more, so she puts a lot more work into them. I think it comes down to a different style horse.”

More importantly, lowering takeout at a single track is no longer a true test of the benefits of doing so. It would have been in 1970, before anyone had heard of OTBs, simulcasting and ADWs. Back then, had someone cashed a bet and got an extra $10 thanks to a lower take that $10 could only have been bet at one place, the track the fan was attending. Depending on how well the player fared through the rest of the day and how many more winners they had with the lower takeout, the extra money put in their pockets could have meant $100, $200 in churn and extra handle.
Not anymore.
…
The only way to get to the bottom of whether or not a takeout reduction would benefit not just the player but the sport itself by driving up handle in a significant way would be for every track to cut its takeout simultaneously. In America’s most dysfunctional sport, that, of course will never happen.
The good guys at Canterbury gave it a try, but it was an experiment that never had a chance. The sport is not set up so that a single track can hope to have a major and successful impact with a takeout reduction. That’s a shame because horse racing sells a product (bets) and it is grotesquely overpriced, perhaps the single biggest reason why the sport is struggling.
