“Horse ownership is, by and large, a money-losing proposition,” Moss said. “And the reason why so many people enjoy owning racehorses is the experience that goes along with it—being able to go to the barn, watch your horse train in the morning, feed him peppermints, show up to the race in the afternoon, the excitement of the race with all your friends at the racetrack, maybe getting your picture made in the winner’s circle if your horse wins. All of that went away during the pandemic.” As Paulick asked, “If you can’t go see your horses, do you want to go buy more horses?”

The entries for the 2021 Kentucky Oaks were released this morning and 2 trainers that have trained horses in Alberta in the past have 3 year old fillies in the race.
Robert Atras who trained for many years at Assiniboia Downs and a couple in Alberta has Maracuja, owned by Beach Haven Thoroughbreds LLC bred by River Bend Farm Inc., Austin Musselman & Janie Musselman and to be ridden by Kendrick Carmouche. When she cracked her maiden Maracuja scurried into the contention – how did the Undertaker miss that when he always used to scurry down the HRA Hallways to the QKB’s office to rat on Phil and Sal – and put the entire field away including UpSeventyFour, a filly bred by Albertan Mat Monaco and named in honour of Richard Yates.
Robertino Diodoro who trained in Alberta for many years has Ava’s Grace owned by Cypress Creek Equine bred by Southern Equine Stables, LLC and to be ridden by David Cohen.

Topo Cries Foul!!
The Topo Restaurant featured above did not contact Topo to obtain rights to the Mouse of the People’s name!! Rights Infringement – Topo sees a lawsuit here!! Plus the real Topo is much better looking than the imposter!!
Phil – the bigger question for the asking is – does anyone employed at HRA know what’s going on beyond a 6 block radius of their Edmonton office?
Two young trainers who plied their trade in Western Canada where anyone who passed an Economics 101 course long ago could see there was no financial incentive to remain here moved on to the big time. So far in 2021 horses trained by Diodoro have won 79 races for total purse money of $2,290,478US and Atras have won 20 races for total purse money of $1,253,952US in 1/3 of the year.
Total purse money for all thoroughbreds in all of Alberta in 2019 was $5,909,916CDN.
