Build it and they still might not come. Left unsolved is how Maryland will make up 1/ST’s funding of racing operations without 1/ST as a partner. The future of racing is not secure until a sustainable revenue source is secured. Maryland currently funds a portion of purses from a percentage of VLT revenue. Still, racing interests there look longingly at Virginia and Kentucky, where historical horse racing machines have monetized racing’s intellectual property for the benefit of live racing circuits. For now, at least, the 150th running of the Preakness at Pimlico won’t be the last.
