Paulick Report – Chelsea Hackbarth – What Does The Next Jessica Paquette See?
Some day I’m going to have to stand before God, and if He asks me why I didn’t let that [Jackie] Robinson fellow play ball, I don’t think saying ‘because of the color of his skin’ would be a good enough answer.

Phil has a question:
Were things ever handed to Tina.
I’ve always believed that a race-caller makes a good race great. When it happens, the spine starts to tingle and your arm is covered in goosebumps.
In a great call ‘a champion becomes legend’ and a thoroughbred warrior is anointed ‘the fighting tiger’.
Horses ‘rocket down the outside’, ‘jump out of ground’ and ‘come back off the canvass’. It’s ‘London to a brick-on’ or ‘gone for all money’; ‘flat as a biscuit’ (thanks Terry Bailey!) or ‘flying home’.
These are the phrases that make racing special.
…
I don’t think you’ll have to tell an American they have some of the worst race-callers in the world – they would’ve figured it out years ago.

You’ve got to be twice as good as a man to get half as far.

Luckily, this is not difficult.

To Phil the epitome of a good caller is if you listen to the call without watching the video and can picture the race unfolding.
To Phil the great callers express the thrill of victory with the agony of defeat.
Phil is not a fan of Jessica Paquette’s race calling at Parx, but Phil is not a hater. Technically her calling is okay as she positions the horses properly, both as to position and place on the track, notes their movement, concentrates on the main players and mentions the others often enough. Phil just doesn’t like the sound of her voice and that’s a personal preference. Phil finds that Jessica’s voice is a tad nasally and droning. The droning comes from running on and not pausing.
Music is the space between the notes.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

Phil has a question:
Will the next female announcer not look to Jessica Paquette and say thanks for taking all that shit and blazing the trail.
Did Jessica contact the owners of the Puma to ascertain how they would like their horse’s name pronounced.
How many actors lost their jobs when talkies came out and their voices weren’t acceptable.
Will the next female announcer not listen to Jessica Paquette and say I can do better.
Will the next female announcer not listen to 95% of the male callers out there and say I can do better.
Will the next female announcer not listen to the callers at Century Mile and Downs and say anyone can do better.
Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late.
