Hanson’s comments about the 2026 Eclipse Awards may be foretelling, but the statistics and comments in his last few paragraphs are far more foretelling of the continuing decline of the thoroughbred racing industry at all levels across North America.

Sovereignty’s relatively thin record also highlights a worrying trend that spans many decades: today’s champions are generally far less accomplished than their ancestors.

If the horses noted above do end up winning their division titles, they will have won an average of 3.2 stakes this season. Ten years ago, in 2016, the average was 3.7. Earlier averages at 10-year intervals were 3.8 in 2006, 4.2 in 1996, 4.9 in 1986, 4.6 in 1976, and 5 in 1966.

The median number of stakes wins for presumptive flat champions in 2026 will be 3, the same number as in 2016. The median was 4 in 2006 and 1996, 5 in 1986 and 1976, and 4 in 1966.

Granted, all top-level horses are making fewer appearances, and thus stakes attempts, than they used to. Perhaps they’re winning a higher percentage of them now, too.

At its highest level, the sport of racing and the breed itself have undoubtedly changed, and not necessarily for the better.
