Horse Race Insider – Pricci – 123 Saturday Advance Florida Derby Day
Well before racetracks were putting up bonuses to lure American Pharoah after his Triple Crown campaign, Fasig-Tipton developed the idea for a $1 million bonus in the Florida Derby to generate interest for the 2015 Florida sale, which was held at Gulfstream for the first time.
“We were looking for a way to kind of jumpstart the sale and take advantage of the new location at Gulfstream Park,” Browning said of the Florida sale, which is held each March. “Obviously, seeing your sales graduates perform at the highest level is a great reward for us.”
But Browning never imagined that the bonus would produce a matchup between undefeated Derby contenders.
“I wish I could tell you that we were geniuses, and it was exactly the concept that we had in mind,” Browning said. “But we were very, very lucky and fortunate that it has brought together two special horses. It has helped spur interest in not only this race, but in the industry, and it could not have worked out any better.”

For Nyquist, it’s a paycheck that would exceed first-place money in any of the Triple Crown races. Thanks to a $1 million bonus created a year ago by Gulfstream and Fasig-Tipton, Nyquist, as a graduate of F-T Gulfstream, would bank $1.6 million with a win—the $600,000 first-place purse plus the $1 million bonus. The Kentucky Derby prize amounts to about $1.2 million. The Preakness and Belmont hang out about $900,000 to their winner.
Nyquist’s bonus is an all-or-nothing proposition. Win and take home the extra million. Run second and all you earn is the Florida Derby’s $200K place money.
O’Neill says he isn’t bringing his colt 3,000 miles to take on the only challenger mentioned in the same breath as Nyquist solely for the bonus. Right!
Anyone who follows sports knows whenever someone says, “It’s not about the money,” it’s about the money.

Sal says it’s time for owners and trainers to stop being paura della tua ombra and to start racing the best against the best. 8 other owners and trainers haven’t conceded the Florida Derby to Nyquist or Mohaymen.
With a $1 million bonus available to Nyquist if he wins the Florida Derby Sal says it sounds like Stronach and Co. aren’t ready to bow down to the Twin Spires of CDI.
Sal says when trainers keep ducking competition that waters down the product we’re selling to the fans and the last time Sal checked horse racing needs all the fans it can get.

“I know it was really far back but I wasn’t really paying attention.”
The jockey also paid tribute to the team who have worked with the horse during his time in Dubai, adding: “I want to say thank you to everyone that follows me and all the Chrome team.
“I know it’s not easy to choose the right jockey to win this race and it means a lot to me. I’ve been close twice, so third time was the charm.”

Mo Tom, who has a powerful late kick, was favored off his rough trip in the Risen Star last month. Once again, he ran into a roadblock while trying to rally in the stretch with jockey Corey Lanerie and wound up fourth, one place worse than the Risen Star, a result that left his trainer, Tom Amoss, fuming.
“Corey’s going to have to explain that ride,” Amoss said. “It’s beyond my understanding. He was locked and loaded, so why he chose the most dangerous route is beyond me. I flashed back to all the work we’ve done with him. It’s like being an eyewitness to your kid being beaten up at the playground. He’s got such a fine move. Just go around.”

“We have to do things differently,” concedes LeLacheur.
CTV – Calgary – White – New agreement gives Alberta horse racing a late push towards viability
Sal wonders if Rick LeLacheur took some courses at the Nuke LaLoosh school of cliches.
Sal says that they don’t have to do things differently, they have to do things better.
Non è un problema facile da risolvere.
Rick LeLacheur’s comments wreak of a weak management style that starts to fine tune solutions before it understands the problem. The problem at Horse Racing Alberta is Rick LeLacheur as Chair and Shirley McClellan as CEO of an organization with an ungovernable structure. Change the people fix the structure and we will see progress.
Sal wonders when they will start doing things differently at Horse Racing Alberta.
On Saturday March 19, 2016 Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci was scheduled to appear at Century Downs at 11:30 AM MDT to announce that the Alberta provincial government and Horse Racing Alberta had reached a new 10 year Memorandum of Understanding for the slot revenue split.
If Sal was running the show he would have made sure that there was a huge crowd of horse racing participants and fans in attendance at Century Downs to show the present government that they had made the migliore decisione by extending the MOU for another decade. Sal wonders why Horse Racing Alberta did not do a better job communicating the event to the thousands of participants and fans in the province of Alberta. Sal wonders when Horse Racing Alberta will start to do things differently.
Sal thinks that Shirley McClellan and Rick LeLacheur must have known about this event as they both were present. Sal thinks that Jeff Robillard, Manager, Marketing, Broadcasting & Communications, must have known about this event as he is the Manager, Marketing, Broadcasting & Communications for Horse Racing Alberta who stays in shape scurrying to the QKB’s office to rat on Phil and now Sal.
Sal will tell you that Sal did not receive an e-mail from Jeff Robillard, Shirley McClellan or Rick LeLacheur about this event, but Sal heard through the grapevine about the event and posted the information he received on www.holybull.ca. Sal understands that Jeff Robillard, Shirley McClellan and Rick LeLacheur have an animosity towards Phil M. Stockmen and now Hawthorne Sal but are these people so clueless that they don’t understand the code. Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.
Not sending an e-mail to Sal may have been an oversight or a deliberate slight to show Sal who has the power, but how under any colour of sky can you justify Horse Racing Alberta never posting a Notice of the Time and Place of one of the most major announcements affecting the horse racing industry in the province of Alberta on their own website. This was a perfect way to show the horse racing industry in the province of Alberta that “We have to do things differently” and what does Horse Racing Alberta do. Drop the ball, just like the Edmonton Eskimos used to do during Rick LeLacheur’s tenure.
What really bothered Sal about Rick Lelacheur’s comments was the nonchalant manner in which he said that we can live with it (the cuts) as an industry. Easy to say when you’re in a salaried position while the horsemen will be the ones to take the brunt of the cuts.
Sal says that the industry can only live with the cuts if the industry takes the steps to improve racing, the racing handle, food and beverage and slot performance. Nothing that either Rick LeLacheur or Shirley McClellan have said in the last few weeks gives Sal any indication that either of them have the ability to lead an industry renewal.
Sal says that the migliore soluzione for doing things differently will be without Shirley McClellan as CEO and Rick LeLacheur as Chair.

Shirley McClellan has been hinting about various parties that are looking at building a track in the Edmonton area. Sal has said that he is aware of a group that is looking at building a thoroughbred track in the Edmonton area provided that Shirley McClellan and Rick LeLacheur are gone from Horse Racing Alberta or its replacement.
Sal was on the blower with a couple of members of this group over the weekend and nobody from this group has spoken to or been approached by Shirley McClellan, Rick LeLacheur or any other person from Horse Racing Alberta. Sal has not been contacted by Shirley McClellan, Rick LeLacheur or any other person from Horse Racing Alberta seeking information on this group.
If Sal was running the show he would turn over every granello di sabbia looking for parties interested in building a new track in the Edmonton area even if it meant talking to il diavolo incarnate. Sal knows that Max Gibb would call Sal if Max needs some information from Sal.
Sal understands that Jeff Robillard, Shirley McClellan and Rick LeLacheur have an animosity towards Phil M. Stockmen and now Hawthorne Sal but are these people’s ass hat’s on so tight that they don’t understand that often the duties you owe to your organization and the people it looks after require you to take actions which you may find personally distasteful.

Sal was wondering why Edmonton Northlands had to waste as much money as they did on their PITS Vision 2020, when Vision Terry Jones sounds more reasonable and less costly.
Sal was wondering what planning Edmonton Northlands did between July 2010 and 2015.
From Terry Jones article and much of what Sal hears and reads about Edmonton Northlands it appears that Edmonton Northlands just does not provide the pricing and customer service and experience to be able to compete.
