Schroeder, the chief operating officer of NFL Media, acknowledged the on-field product for the viewership gains, but also credited business innovations.

The 17-game season created new matchups that wouldn’t have happened under the prior scheduling formula yet delivered big numbers. Such was the case with the Chiefs’ 13-7 win over the Green Bay Packers in Kansas City on Nov. 7, which aired on Fox and finished as the season’s ninth-most-watched game. Also, ViacomCBS’s move in the 2020 playoffs to produce a Nickelodeon broadcast for kids got others thinking about alternate broadcasts, and this year, ESPN2 saw extraordinary numbers for the “ManningCast” on ESPN2.

“[Nickelodeon] was a timely and impactful learning going into the deals last spring, and it built a market out for all of our partners to think about ways to expand the viewership experience, and grow incremental audiences,” Schroeder said. “I really hand it to ESPN with the ManningCast.”

The “Monday Night Football” package was up nearly 15.6%  over 2020, and up 12.1% over ’19, with ManningCast viewership setting records for alternative broadcasts.

ESPN Senior Vice President Julie Sobieski credited the expanded season, which included a Week 18 Saturday doubleheader in the “MNF” package. All but five “MNF” games were simulcast on either ABC or ESPN2.
