PEDULLA: Albaugh has been to the Derby a number of times. You are still seeking that first win. Do you ever feel you are closing in on it?
LOUTSCH: No. This game is so hard. You think about how much luck is involved with post position and trip. Our first goal is to get to the Derby. You can’t win unless you are in the race. You want to have a sound horse. After that, you have to leave it up to the horse and the racing gods.

Jones bought in on a horse campaigned by Guhle’s Lucky 13 Racing syndicate and was hooked from there. He soon became a partner on another Lucky 13 Racing horse named Maria’s Song (Marine Landing). When Maria’s Song made his debut on Canadian Derby Day and won going away, Jones brought over 50 people with him into the winner’s circle at Century Mile Racetrack.

“It looked like we had won the Super Bowl,” Guhle recalled with a laugh. “But I think that really sparked something for both of us in seeing how excited everyone was and the enjoyment of bringing people together to share that moment. Racing can bring those thrills that you can’t really experience anywhere else. It got the wheels turning of how we could bring more people in.”

Bill Dory and Adam Ference aren’t the only Albertans with a talented 3 year old south of the 49th. On Saturday February 18, 2023 Randy Howg’s 3 year old American Freedom colt Airtime won an Allowance optional claiming $100,000US with a purse of $104,000.00. Trained by Robertino Diodoro Airtime covered the mile and 1/16th in 1:44:97 under the capable handling of Cristian A. Torres who navigated through traffic up the rail down the stretch and drew off late. Airtime was claimed from a Starter Optional Claiming $50,000.00US from Gary and Mary West.

Sal says that Airtime may be a little late for the Triple Crown Trail, but there’s plenty of stakes left for 3 year olds south of the 49th and Robertino seems to have an affinity for the Manitoba and Canadian Derbies.
