“Why is New York state loaning money for a brand-new luxury racing facility when the tracks they are replacing have atrocious attendance records? Over just the last four decades Belmont’s attendance has fallen 88% and Aqueduct’s has dropped an astounding 94%,” said an analysis prepared for a coalition of animal rights and education advocacy groups.
The End Horse Racing Subsidies Coalition includes New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, Alliance for Quality Education and NY Communities for Change.
You can make a “cultural heritage” case for keeping New York’s horse-racing industry alive, even though the free market would execute it.
But don’t insult the public by pretending the state can reap a windfall by burning more taxpayer cash on this money pit.
The Empire State faces a dire budget future; if it’s going to turn the economy around, it needs to put broad tax reduction far ahead of special-interest giveaways.
NY Post – Time to douse NY’s horse- racing ‘burn pit’
Phil has a question:
How few horsemen will read and take heed.
How many horseman will not understand and bury there heads further in the sand.
Why does read rhyme with heed and read rhyme with head.
Do horseman realize that the movement from the back 40 family farm to massive corporate agribusiness will slowly but surely erode rural voting power.
Do horsemen realize that it’s only a matter of time before the politicians smell more votes behind the urban economic analysis than the rural cultural heritage plea.
What does a vote smell like.
Bailing twine turns every farmer into MacGyver.

“When Bobby Dodd and I first bought Girvin he was a beautiful, strong colt, that looked fast,” said owner Brad Grady. “As a yearling, Mr. Beau Lane told Bobby and I that we had a serious horse and explained his depth of pedigree in a way that two rednecks could understand. Bobby was always high on Girvin and gave him the accolades of a freak. He had a minor setback as a two-year-old that kept us from pinhooking him. We had the chance to race him, and he took us on the ride of a lifetime that we will never forget. It was a very easy decision to support him for both Misty and I, and when we got a glimpse of his first foals, we knew we did the right thing for him and us. He has more than blessed our family. We are grateful to Airdrie Stud and Ocala Stud for supporting Girvin, and giving him the best possible chance for success.

Eric Hamelback, CEO, National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association: “Today, we stand firmly on our victory in the Fifth Circuit, however we are disappointed in the Sixth Circuit ruling. We have stated from the onset that there are multiple aspects of unconstitutionality plaguing HISA. The Fifth Circuit ruled on the arguments presented to them, and the Sixth Circuit ruled on the arguments they were presented. With that, we remain confident in our arguments and committed to our case. As seen now, the shifting legal uncertainty only upholds more confusion ahead for the industry and should lead everyone to agree we need a new bill to correct this uncertainty. We will keep fighting all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary to protect our industry and make sure our rules and regulations are built on a legal foundation.”

Phil won’t be giving out Italy On Plate for this years Kentucky Derby Contest if Holybull.ca has one, but Phil did receive Frankie Dettori’s Italian Family Cookbook and Phil was pleasantly surprised. Most of the recipes are simple highlighting fresh seasonal ingredients. Frankie’s Bolognese recipe may not be in the same league as Marcella Hazen or even the Soprano’s Sunday Gravy, but it is easier and quicker. Plenty of pictures and anecdotes from Frankie and Marco Pierre White.
Phil’s sure that White did most of the work on the recipes and Phil’s now gotta get a copy of White Heat, even if it’s not an original edition.
More is lost by indecision than by wrong decision.
