I asked him to tell me what he remembered from all those years of writing about sports, for he had seen some things in his time: Michael Jordan at North Carolina, a teenage John McEnroe, Bear Bryant, the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati. This is what he told me:
I was at Secretariat’s Derby, in ’73, the year before you were born – I don’t guess you were even conceived yet. That was … just beauty, you know? He started in last place, which he tended to do. l was covering the second-place horse, which wound up being Sham. It looked like Sham’s race going into the last turn, I think. The thing you have to understand is that Sham was fast, a beautiful horse. He would have had the Triple Crown in another year.
And it just didn’t seem like there could be anything faster than that. Everybody was watching him. It was over, more or less. And all of a sudden there was his … like, just a disruption in the comer of your eye, in your peripheral vision. And then before you could make our what it was, here Secretariat came. And then Secretariat had passed him. No one had ever seen anything run like that – a lot of the old guys said the same thing. It was like he was some other animal out there …

Dorth Vader, a John Ropes Florida homebred requited herself very well in the Acorn on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Belmont running a game second to Pretty Mischievous, beaten only a short head. Dorth Vader is by Girvin (Tale of Ekati) out of the Yonaguska mare Hardcore Candy who was campaigned in Alberta by Darrell Landry and then Amber Buniak and Ryan McLean. Hardcore Candy won 8 races from 40 starts with 8 seconds and 4 thirds, earning $101,308. She was Stakes placed in the Freedom of the City Stakes (Black Type) at Northlands Park.
But similar to her rally from fifth early in the Kentucky Oaks, the daughter of Into Mischief soon found herself in a stretch battle—this time with Dorth Vader —before prevailing at the wire.

Thoroughbred announcing is incredibly difficult — even veteran play-by-play announcers bristle when they think about the gig. The animals move fast and stick close together, identifiable by only their saddle cloth or jockey silks. Paquette keeps a lineup of colored pencils in the booth to mark up her race sheets with the proper silks, and scratches notes next to each horse’s name — for example, if it’s wearing blinkers or not — to fill in the details as she calls 10 races a day three days a week. As they hit the backstretch, they’re nearly impossible to discern by the naked eye — and that’s without factoring in the elements, such as rain or fog. Meanwhile, anxious bettors hang on the announcer’s every word.
“You memorize the field, get dialed in and then you’ve got to forget the names you just remembered five minutes ago,’’ says Chris Griffin, her predecessor at Parx. “It’s not something you can go to school for. They’re not talking about what to say when a horse stumbled out of the gate in the fifth race at journalism school.”

That’s just a dose of the vitriol tossed Paquette’s way via message boards and social media. Others pretend to offer advice, all while prefacing their remarks with “love’’ or “honey.’’ Some intimated about just how she got the job; some flat-out propositioned her.

“This is the kind of adversity that should bring us together, but the old school thinks it will just go away and the blue bloods don’t want to change, so it won’t happen. These changes won’t come easy in an industry, unlike other professional sports, that does not have a national league with a commissioner or a board of governors, with regular meetings of owners, player associations and other interested parties to create shared and unified regulation. That is why I believe it is time for a CEO-level horse racing leadership summit of racetrack owners and veterinarians.
Regardless of the findings that come out of Churchill Downs, our industry faces a watershed moment. The time has come for all stakeholders to meet this moment with a unified commitment to the safety and welfare of horses and riders. If we can do that, I believe we can earn back the public trust and strengthen the social license required to sustain horse racing into the future.

Phil has a beef. When Phil was searching for videos of the 4 post Secretariat Triple Crown winners Phil kept getting the same message on a number of sites: Video Unavailable. Phil can understand media outlets like NBC trying to protect their economic interests by forcing customers to use their paid services, but come on, Justify was in 2018 and American Pharoah was 2015. Since there’s no Thoroughbred Racing Commissioner to pressure the media outlets to ensure that content for fans remains easily accessible thoroughbred racing publicity suffers at the hands of entities who make money from racing.
Phil’s a diehard badger who’ll keep digging for the info, but racing suffers when the info is not at the fingertips of the newbies. And remember that the computer generations’ attention span is a tad shorter than that of a gnat.

“You’ve all called us in here for a special session, and are asking, minimally, for the state to give you all $36 million per year for the next five years for a taxpayer-funded stadium, at the same time that the governor has vetoed funding for summer school, a bill to support children’s mental health, a bill requiring paid family leave — all because the governor said we couldn’t afford them,” State Senator Rochelle Nguyen said early in a three-hour back and forth with two advocates of the bill.
“Can you explain to me why we need to provide hundreds of millions of dollars for a billionaire team to come to the Las Vegas Strip, on some of the most valuable property in the world, if we can’t provide funding for critical resources?” Nguyen continued. “Can you explain to me why this is such a good deal that we should agree that no taxes generated on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana should go to these critical state and local services for the next 30 years?”

The universe is hilarious! Like, Venus is 900 degrees. I could tell you it melts lead. But that’s not as fun as saying, ‘You can cook a pizza on the windowsill in nine seconds.’ And next time my fans eat pizza, they’re thinking of Venus!

While Phil was researching New York tunes for the Belmont Preview and Review it came to Phil’s attention that while Shea stadium had quite a few famous concerts the actual number of concerts at Shea was smaller than one would expect. Phil contrasted that with what Tim Reid, the idiot who put the final brush strokes on the demise of of Edmonton Northlands and is now working on destroying REAL, had planned for the never constructed concert venue where the remains of the race track and barns still stand. If a stadium in a city that has almost as many people as the 4 western provinces combined is not having weekly outdoor concerts then how did Reid think that a city with 1/10th of the population of New York would support the venues he was proposing.
The better question is who at Edmonton Northlands and now REAL missed the boat when vetting Reid’s credentials. With the ability to fact check that the Internet provides it’s unadulterated negligence to not vet the CV of someone you’re hiring for a tough level executive position. Any horseplayer knows that past performance is a much truer indicator of future performance than pie in the sky fantasizing. With Tim Reid at the helm the Edmonton Northlands steamship struck the proverbial iceberg head on, but there’s still a chance that the residents of the city of Regina wake up before REAL becomes UNREAL.
The lawyer with the briefcase can steal more money than the man with the gun.
Don Vito Corleone
With roughly 56,000 fans in attendance, this was the largest concert at Commonwealth since Garth Brooks played the stadium in 2022. The concert was attended by fans from across the country as Edmonton and Vancouver are the only Canadian stops on Comb’s 2023 world tour.

Phil’s reprising Sal:
Sal says that while Phil was able to read and post select writings from the NY Times – The Rail Blog all we’re left with today is the NY Times – Hoppert and Drape – Belmont 2017: Our Predictions to Win, Place and Show.
Sal doesn’t want to shatter your illusions that thoroughbred racing is prospering when the amount of landscape that thoroughbred racing retains in the major and minor newspapers’ sports sections couldn’t grow a handful of radishes.
And in 2023 we will not see or hear as much about the Belmont and thoroughbred racing as we did in 2017. And much of what we won’t see in 2023 is behind internet pay walls where you pay with cash or personal information discouraging racing fans both new and old from reading it. And much of what we do see will be negative publicity dealing with the recent spate of horse deaths at major tracks.
Phil’s reprising, but the message remains the same:
University of Waterloo – Drug testing athletes now easier
Phil has a question:
How much do you think that drug testing has improved in the 5 years since that article was written.
How much do you think that the cheaters have improved in the 5 years since that article was written.
How quickly will AI make drug testing quicker and cheaper.
How quickly will AI make cheating quicker, less detectable and cheaper.
Is it not time for a re-education of trainers on the methodology of testing.
How many trainers don’t understand that this isn’t the good old days where the labs could only test for a couple of things at a time at a great cost.
