Mr. Fillip finished third in Friday’s 5 horse Western Canada Handicap and Belle Epoque was a steward’s scratch in Friday’s Chariot Chaser Handicap. Robertino Diodoro showing as trainer means that Alberta is not reciprocally honouring the HISA / HIWU provisional suspension or Horse Racing Alberta is just too fucking stupid to care.
A rather small field for one of the Canadian Derby preps does not bode well for thoroughbred racing in Alberta.
Far worse was the brutally paltry $461,566.00 handle for 9 races on a Friday evening with no NHL or NBA playoffs. On Wednesday June 5, 2024 the handle for a 7 race card at Assiniboia Downs reached $1,523,293.00, over $1 MILLION more than Century.
Phil has a question:
What is Assiniboia doing better.
Phil has an answer:
The competence of the people running the show in Assiniboia Downs compared to the road kill we have in Alberta at Horse Racing Alberta and Century Mile.
With Horse Racing Alberta wasting taxpayers’ dollars the UCP should be paying attention, but they’re too busy making sure Tory cronies like Alison Redford get their pensions topped up.
Phil heard a rumour that they’re going to change the license plates in Alberta from Wildrose Country to the Land Of Nepotism and Cronyism.

What do most people not understand about the news media? I would say two things. First: The most important bias in news media is not left or right. It’s a bias toward negativity and catastrophe. Second: While it would be convenient to blame the news media exclusively for this bad-news bias, the truth is that the audience is just about equally to blame.

Randy Howg, John Holleman, Norman Tremblay, Surging Sky Ventures, LLC, Brian McGinnis and Selman Shaby’s Mr. Fillip is entered in Friday’s Western Canada Handicap, part of a paltry field of 5. Robertino Diodoro shows as trainer meaning that Alberta is not reciprocally honouring the HISA / HIWU provisional suspension or Horse Racing Alberta is just too fucking stupid to care. Mr. Fillip is coming off a stakes victory at Prairie Meadows where Matt Williams shows as trainer as IOWA is a HISA / HIWU jurisdiction.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

As all true gamblers know, the moods of luck, whether bad or good, are as changeable as the winds. One moment she might be with you, guiding you gently toward some distant paradise you never hoped to see; the next, she could be battering you to death against the rocks. A successful gambler therefore, the old man had said, is not one on whom luck never turns her back, but rather one who knows the moment to take their fate back from her into their own hands.

Phil’s reprising Sal:
Sal says that while Phil was able to read and post select writings from the NY Times – The Rail Blog all we’re left with today is the NY Times – Hoppert and Drape – Belmont 2017: Our Predictions to Win, Place and Show.
Sal doesn’t want to shatter your illusions that thoroughbred racing is prospering when the amount of landscape that thoroughbred racing retains in the major and minor newspapers’ sports sections couldn’t grow a handful of radishes.
Drape and Hoppert didn’t even publish picks for the 2024 Preakness at Pimlico and will only have picks for the 2024 Belmont cuz it’s in their home state.
Far too many thoroughbred racing participants in North America live in their blinkers on world content with their slots supported purses not understanding that the vast, vast, vast majority of the general public either does not give a frozen road apple about horse racing or has a very negative attitude about horse racing , the former being perhaps worse than the latter.
The 2024 Belmont will see a boost in media coverage since its being run at Saratoga while Belmont is being rebuilt and one of the entrants, Seize the Grey, has over 2,500 owners and their influence will help garner attention. Much of what the general public including the desperately needed new fans won’t see in 2024 is behind internet pay walls where you pay with cash or personal information discouraging racing fans both new and old from reading it. And much of what we do see will be negative publicity dealing with the unfortunate, but inevitable horse deaths at major tracks.
Phil’s reprising, but the message remains the same:
Phil’s reprising Phil:
Hard to believe that a decade has passed since the call to the post at Hollywood Park was replaced by the Last Post.
Phil never realized until he watched that replay that the winner of the 2009 Canadian Derby, Tommy Danzigger, raced in the last race that took place at Hollywood Park. Not only did he race in the last race at Hollywood Park he has the unique distinction of being the last horse to cross the Hollywood Park finish line in an official race as he finished 12th of 12. Of the 4 thoroughbred tracks that Tommy Danzigger raced at 2 are now shuttered.
The gain to the winner is always less than the loss to the loser.
Ian Fleming
However, to behold the scope of the new Hollywood Park development is to understand why Thoroughbred racing is armed only with a dull knife in a high calibre gunfight for even a small share of the sports economy. SoFi Stadium, ugly as it is, will be crammed to the gills on Feb. 13 for the Super Bowl, monopolizing both social and traditional media, while the name of Hollywood Park, when summoned, will mean something altogether different from its origin story.
