Peter Redekop’s August Rain led a BC dominance of the thoroughbred stakes on the 2024 Canadian Derby Day card. Trained by Barbara Heads with Amadeo Perez in the irons August Rain closed from the boonies and won the 2024 95th Canadian Derby going away. The BC bred son of Sungold topped an All BC Exacta with J Dutton in second and an All Invader Triacta with Roussette getting show money. None of the invaders were from Vernon.
Bloodhorse – Joe Perez – August Rain Gives Connections Another Canadian Derby
Peter Redekop’s Avana started the BC dominance winning the Oaks for Barbara Heads with Amadeo Perez in the irons.
Barbara Heads switched jockeys to Antonio Reyes and owners to Edmonton Oiler Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and William Decoursey to take the Northlands Distaff. Infinite Patience cranked out the 21st win of her stellar career.
Highfield’s Varatti with N’Rico Prescod in the saddle for Craig Smith was the lone Alberta representative in the Stakes winners circle.
Apprehend made sure that the BC contingent had traveling money for their journey back over the Rockies. The son of Arrogate out of the Meier family’s Elevated Bloodstock Alberta based mare Hero’s Amor took the nightcap, an Allowance for 3 year olds and up. Apprehend’s win got the hats flying at the Derby with 4 wins on the day for Barbara Heads and 3 for Amadeo Perez and Peter Redekop.

Bloodhorse – Molly Rollins – August Rain, Classy City Meet Again in Canadian Derby
Phil checked the nominations for the 2024 Canadian Derby Sunday morning and there’s no Autumn Rain nominated.
Phil checked theHorses.com on Monday Morning and it now says August Rain.
Alabama Rain won the 2005 Canadian Derby for Peter Redekop when Lance Giesbrecht was still training and in 2023 Peter Redekop won the Canadian Derby with a son of Arrogate, Abeliefinthislivin, with Barbara Heads training
Continuing with his A naming scheme Peter Redekop has August Rain nominated to the 2024 Canadian Derby with Barbara Heads training. The horse is welcome at Century Mile, but I’m sure they would not be welcoming the forecast August rain.
