The 2025 Derby drew one of the largest crowds in recent memory, with the biggest handle in track history for a seven-race card. The biggest payout came in the form of the Jackpot Pick 5, which began the night with a carryover pot of $465,218 and ended up just north of $2 million for winners to split — a winning 20-cent ticket paid $2,469.46.

This was the first time in the running of the Derby the winner has been disqualified.

Highfield Investment Group, Inc., Dialed In Racing Stable, Bruce Appleyard, Jamie Graham, Lucky Diamonds Racing, Smokin Guns Stable, James Bauder, Robert Bauder, John O’Neill and Leslie O’Neill’s Attack took the 77th Manitoba Derby at 1 1/8 miles on the Assiniboia Downs dirt for $125,750 on the DQ of Take Charge Tom. Attack, a 3 year old Munnings gelding from the Irish bred Galileo mare Ammannati, trained by Craig R. Smith and ridden to victory by N’Rico Prescod took home $76,500.00.
Phil’s not usually on the side of the stewards but Phil was impressed at how quickly the inquiry sign came up when the incident occurred and that the stewards had the intestinal fortitude to take down a 1/2 favourite. Rasheed Hughes on Take Charge Tom came over from the 7 hole way too quick and was lucky that he didn’t take any horses down as Tale Charge Tom appeared to be clip heels with War Is Hell.
