2025 British Columbia Derby GIII

Lorie Henson’s Rondelito made a quick move down the backstretch to get the jump on the field and was never challenged for the lead with Accidental Genius and Dancing Porky making late moves for place and show money. Rondelito is a 3 year old BC bred gelding by Lent out of the Street Sense mare Vandelita. Rondelito is trained by Steve Henson and was ridden to victory by Kimal Santo. Rondelito notched his fifth win in a row, the last 4 in Stakes at Hastings Racecourse. After their questionable double DQ in the Oaks the stewards made no change in the Derby disallowing 2 separate jockey claims of foul.

Phil has a question:

Was the track doctor called to the jock’s room.

Did anyone from the western Canadian Derby series ask the connections of Rondelito why they did not travel to Assiniboia Downs for the Manitoba Derby.

Did anyone from the western Canadian Derby series ask the connections of Rondelito what incentives would have drawn them to Assiniboia Downs for the Manitoba Derby.

2025 British Columbia Oaks (Black Type)

Wil-A-Way Farm, Gail C. Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ Zenari was placed first after 2 horses disqualified. Zenari is a 3 year old BC bred filly by Counterforce out of the Roar Mare Golden Roar. She is trained by Pat Jarvis and was ridden by Antonio Ambrosio Reyes.

Phil has a question:

Did Antonio Ambrosio Reyes go to the Yves Turcotte school of chicken shit overreacting for the stewards.

Phil has reproduced the running summary from the Equibase charts.

GEE I’M FOXY away well and vied for the lead from along the rail entering the first turn, before asserting herself on the lead through the stretch the first time, drifted off the rail leaving the second turn, pushing ZENARI out and forcing that rival to bump with SOMEDAY LADY, continued one the lead in the run down the backside from the inside of SOMEDAY LADY, turned back that rival entering the lane, and inched clear late. SOMEDAY LADY broke sharply and tracked the leaders through the first turn while racing just out from the rail, maintained her tracking trip into the second turn before shifting three wide leaving
the turn, loomed up to force the issue early in the run down the backside, but was bumped and turned sideways as part of a chain reaction, battled two wide from the outside of GEE I’M FOXY for the lead entering the final turn, and while no match for that rival late, closed willingly two wide in the drive to prove second best. ZENARI away alertly and dueled for the lead two wide entering the first turn, before taking a tracking trip one out from the rail through the stretch the first time, held her position through the second turn, was bumped and pushed out soon after entering the backside, chased the battling leaders
through the final turn while saving ground at the rail, and finished evenly in the drive. PRINCESS FAVE unhurried early while trailing the field into the first turn, was always well back and failed to make her pressence felt. Following the running of this race there was a jockey’s claim of foul, as well as a trainer’s claim of foul. The rider of ZENARI lodged a claim of foul against the rider of SOMEDAY LADY for alleged interference midway down the backstretch. The trainer of SOMEDAY LADY lodged a claim of foul against the rider of GEE I’M FOXY alleging interference at the same spot on the backstretch. After review, both claims of foul were upheld. Gee I’M FOXY was disqualified from first and placed second, and SOMEDAY LADY was disqualified from second and placed third.

Watch the replay and the few hundred times the stewards show the bumping incident.  Just like in other professional sports the stewards give back a makeup call when they knew they blew one. September 29, 2007 Ben Zenari’s Pat of Gold was disqualified and placed second in the Alberta Oaks in one of the worst calls of all times from the Northlands Park stewards and there’s plenty of bad calls to choose from.  Zenari, the filly, is from the mare, Golden Roar, who is from the mare Glance’s Gold, who was also the mother of Pat of Gold. The Hastings Park stewards must have checked the list of who is still owed a call to make up for a blown call and saw the name Ben Zenari, so they DQ’d 2 horses and gave Zenari the Black Type that Zenari had been denied 18 year ago.

Phil has a question:

How the fuck can you get 2 horses disqualified in a four horse field.
