With Victor Espinoza dancing with the stars which gets more media cross exposure: thoroughbred racing or Dancing With The Stars.

Neither card would have been possible if management and horsemen at the two tracks didn’t subscribe to a theory that should be obvious to everyone in the sport, that there is way too much racing out there. They apparently didn’t get that memo at Delaware Park, where, yesterday, they had a nine-race card with small fields and cheap horses. It was even worse at Presque Isle Downs, where there were eight races and four of them had seven starters or less. At every track that raced Monday but Parx and Kentucky Downs, they gave the players exactly what they keep telling them they don’t want bad racing and small fields.

Phil has a question:

What about the bettors who would wager on cockroaches running across Hastings.

TwinSpires Blog – ON POINT: What the Pennsylvania Derby can tell us about American Pharoah

First, Parx Racing does not have a good brand image as a racing operation. Horse owners and horseplayers regularly complain about the “super trainers” who consistently win at unfathomable win percentages. Many question why management allows certain trainers or jockeys to compete at Parx when they are either under suspension for serious infractions or banned from other jurisdictions. The inept Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission does not help matters, and neither does an ongoing FBI investigation at another Pennsylvania racetrack, Penn National, near Harrisburg.

Second, as many horseplayers know, Parx has brutal takeout rates on some of its bet types and is ranked 56th of 62 tracks on the annual ratings list compiled by the Horseplayers Association of North America, which looks at several factors, including field size and takeout rates.

The win, place and show (17 percent) and exacta and daily double (20 percent) takeouts are not exorbitant, but the 26 percent on Pick 3, 4, and 6 wagers and the 30 percent on trifectas and superfectas are absolute killers.

Rebate and computer assisted players, who may not be as sensitive to takeout rates, prefer large wagering pools. Those are hard to find at Parx.

Finally, Parx did very little promotion of its Fall Festival to reach simulcast players across the country. In fact, it does little to promote racing throughout the year.

Bad brand image. Bad pricing. Bad marketing.

That is a losing trifecta.

RAILBIRD NOTES

RAILBIRD NOTES BY GLEN TODD

BY GLEN TODD

FALL IS IN THE AIR

There has been a huge change in the weather in the last couple of weeks.  We went from a heat wave for several weeks to a large storm and now cooler fall weather.

One very positive thing I have noticed is over the last several years the fan base usually falls off considerably after Labor Day at Hastings Racecourse.  But hopefully this past Saturday has bucked that trend as Saturday’s crowd was very good.

Saying that though I was a little disappointed in the size of the crowd on Derby Day. The handle was down about $280,000.00 which was difficult to figure but running our biggest day of the season in competition to the NFL Opening Day could have had something to do with it?

HASTINGS FOUR EXTRA DAYS APPROVED

As we mentioned late last week the BCHRIMC confirmed we had reached the handle dollars to allow the extra 4 days of racing.  We now have 12 days of live racing left in the 2015 season.

TUESDAY IS STATS DAY

After Derby Sunday we have now completed 42 days of live racing at Hastings Racecourse.

We have run a total of 318 races with a total of 2205 horse starts.  The average of horses per race is now 6.9 horses per race.

In that total of 318 races, 281 have been overnight races and 37 stakes races.

The total paid out to overnight races is $4,111,301.00. Included in that number is $419,076.00 to the 25% BC Bred Bonus and $41,225.00 to the 6-12 finishers.  The total payout for stakes races obviously took a large jump over the past weekend when $550,000.00 was paid out on Derby Day. That total now stands at $2,185,000.00.  That total is made up of $225,000 in sponsorship dollars, $553,900.00 has been from nomination fees and the balance of $1,406,100 paid directly from the Stake Pool allocation of funds.

The average paid out per day over 42 days is $149,912.00.  That we can assure you is the best north of southern California and west of Toronto.

DERBY NEWSLETTER TAKES A WEEK OFF

This Friday will be the last newsletter for a week as I will be off to the Keeneland Yearling Sale in Lexington, Kentucky for a week.  We leave on Friday morning and won’t be back until Saturday the 26th.

Congratulations to

For his 2,000 Wins

The sport, of course, is accorded reams of publicity every day, but the ordinary sports fan takes zero interest – unless it involves people like Owen, or Wes Welker, the American Football wide receiver who is joint owner of Undrafted, winner of the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The sad end of poor old Brown Panther is a stark reminder of the sheer power of celebrity – and how there’s nothing quite like it if you want to get your product noticed.

But you won’t get anyone – from show business to big business, from sheikhs to shopkeepers – succumbing to the lure of racehorse ownership unless they’re going to get one hell of a kick out of it. So let’s make sure being an owner is fun, fair and fascinating – and let’s keep it that way for all of them.

Maker's Mark Plans Breeders' Cup Bottles

Let’s raise a glass.
And $1 Million for Charity.

Join Breeders’ Cup and Maker’s Mark® in our goal to raise $1 Million over the next three years to support a variety of deserving local and thoroughbred industry charities. Breeders’ Cup and Maker’s Mark® have collaborated on a limited-edition, five-bottle collection featuring a few of the most legendary champions in Breeders’ Cup history. Each bottle pays tribute with a customized design and signature from each Champion’s connections.

This is an extremely limited offer, as only 500 bottles were made for each Champion. Don’t miss your chance to savor the memories of these past champions while helping the local community.

Through your donation you will be granted access to participate in the exclusive commemorative bottle auction which will take place at Keeneland on Thursday, October 29. This event will be the only opportunity to collect the first three bottles of the series. No reserve will be placed on the bottles up for auction.

Quite frankly, it’s the best thing that can happen to us as community leaders to convince people that not participating in civic life has consequences,” said Ben Monterroso, the executive director of Mi Familia Vota Education Fund, one of several organizations that are mounting an ambitious effort to get Latinos to vote in 2016. “They’re challenging the Latino community to see if we’re going to be able to defend ourselves at the ballot box.”

One Response to “2015 Alberta Fall Classic Weekend Preview”

  1. HARNESS SLOW PACE INFRACTIONS LEADING TO SLOWER PACE TO WICKETS?

HRA BAT JUDGES/TOMMY T “get it right” in ruling #59 where TC backs up the field going 27 then 31.2 causing interference and DQ,along with a $200 fine he loses the winner portion of $12500 as part owner, but what about the loyal alberta harness punters at 2/5 who are left with a sour taste in their mouths and lighter wallets as they surf channels to start betting at thoroughbred tracks?

HRA ruling #63 veteran romping ROD eases off the gas enough to save pony and is glad to get a $160 fine for a repeat infraction and ensures the purse of $6500, this has occurred dozens of times recently with all drivers using smart tactics to fill their pockets but what about the bettor’s leaving industry?

HAWTHORNE great racing promotion contest with 5 fans owning a horse with former blackhawk EDDIE OLCZYK, used by ASHA/MERIDAN FARMS years ago, maybe donate a horse with MCDAVID to boast attendance and fan support?

BOBBY ALLEN dispersal sale sept 19, ends a long era of a small time operator taking on the big boys, with the repurposing of ALBERTA DOWNS with festivals next summer,he will be remembered for
providing harness racing with a venue for 5 years while PLAN B was derailed!

ALBERTA DOWNS SOUTH INC, website in a interesting 28 pg.display expanding to LAS VEGAS and applying for a full gaming and horse racing license with NEVADA RACING COMMISSION showing support and is seeking investors. PUBLIC company will be seeking at least $600 million US and a unlimited water supply for turf course, rumoured that captain will be copilot in this venture!

PC federal government show $1.9 billion surplus does CEO/HRA have any surplus funds with budgeted casino revenue and anticipated 15% drop in betting revenue resulting in millions of deficit?

BURNABY NUG/ NEXT GREAT ONE rumoured to be viewing horse sale, will PINKY be expanding his client list since he once trained for the GREAT ONE decades ago!

BC CTHS sale shows 19% average increase, with last years ALBERTA sale at 11,100 average what will happen this year with 100 yearling offered but last year the 101 horses had 37 not sold/RNA/ buyback which bumped the average, probably the 2013 sale fig where 86 offered /10 not sold for average $8842!
