Sal says that when leafing through Phil’s dog-eared archives and making like Matlock Sal suspected that Phil would have wanted Sal to post a preview of the soon to be upon us Breeders’ Cup.

Getting in Gear for 2017

Now that Northlands Park has agreed to bridge staging of live racing in Edmonton until Century Mile is ready to open in late summer, 2018, the next challenge is to get the business model in place and for Northlands to get a racing license from Horse Racing Alberta. “I hope that will get done in short order,” a senior official told me. “Then we can pass a budget so the horsemen know what they’ll have for purses in 2017. That will then allow the horsemen’s groups to negotiate with the tracks for dates. It’s all going to get done. It’s just a matter of how long it takes.”

It can’t happen too quickly for horsemen. They’d like to know where their livelihood is going to take them beyond Dec. 31st.

He said the shrinking attention span of viewers is naturally going to lead to shrinking viewership numbers. He also pointed to methods of delivery other than TV, including the league’s streaming deal with Twitter.

“I believe all traditional sports are going to suffer declines because of the audience of millennials who have broken the habit of their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers of sitting in front of the TV,” he said. “They’re used to far more varied things.”

The old baseball adage rings true again. Good pitching (specifically from Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen) has throttled good hitting. Those pitchers have thrown 22 of the Indians’ 36 innings in this World Series, with a combined earned run average of 0.82.

Today, of course, our paranoia about child safety has reached this fabulous zenith whereby kids are only allowed to trick-or-treat accompanied by an adult….   4 Responses to “Sal’s Suddenly Surfacing Breeders Cup Weekend Pop-Up Preview Post”

  1. PLAN M GAINS MOMENTUM AS NORTHLAND SLOT NOV 4TH REMOVAL DEADLINE LOOMS!

SUPER SLEUTH SAL posted a racing form article by RANDY GOULDING. In a conversation SCOTT SINCLAIR advised that AGLC will start pulling slots after NOV 4/2016 if a deal is not reached for the continuation of live racing at NORTHLANDS PARK for the 2017/2018 racing season. Where’s the communication by the powers to be such as HRA/HBPA? As the president HRA states a decision will be made in a couple weeks under the UGLY DIVORCE notation, how about a DEATH NOTICE!

AGLC under rule 1.3.3 can invoke a RACINO LICENSE is their is no racing license, and that a 1 week’s notice is given which it has to PULL SLOTS, nice backdoor politics kicking the race industry in the backside. Since the CENTURY MILE proposal needs a current RACINO LICENSE due to current freeze and will generate over $250 MILLION in the government coffers over the 10 year MOU AGREEMENT this is a quick execution to get broke NORTHLANDS peas/ques in order to receive HRA $7 mil grant!

PLAN M is gaining support with the ALBERTA DOWNS site with a new operator THEOLOGIAN MANAGEMENT LTD. possibly running operations, not MONKS but maybe are a solution to our prayers and could be short term solution to big problem, that starts with TENILE/HRA GOVERNANCE!

RUMOURED future racing corporate sponsor TROIKA, cabbage roll manufacturer in EDMONTON, could be in trouble with the future park rebranding with no race license, as they utilize local Alberta products such as eggs, 1000 lbs of cabbage daily and other products for their pasta lines.

OILERS FOUNDATION/AGLC 50/50 draw get it right by making a exemption for SEDGEWICK man/ 4 yr son who attended a hockey game and checked ticket 4 business days, instead of 2 day deadline for $67,292. By the way how many racing fans make the trek to NORTHLANDS to enjoy live racing, very little and possibly none if the deadline deal doesn’t get done with major conditions on the table!

WESTERN FAIR/SUGAR LAND had a recent harness race where 8 horses finish in their post positions, where the odds are 40,320-1 and last occured in NA in oct 2010,somebody’s numbers finally came up!

  2. PLAN M GENERATING INQUIRES TO HOLYBULL!

The implementation of PLAN M for next spring has created major discussions and inquires to Sal. A big clue is to think of morning instead of mourning, as CENTURY CASINOS will fill your feed buckets!

TODAY’S HOT RUMOUR straight from city hall is a possible rebranding of NORTHLANDS. Since WALLY WORLD is taken, my suggestion would be KAPUSTA VILLE with a 60 foot high cabbage roll on a fork as the centrepiece, enhancing the non profit agricultural society currently getting its $8 million from TOURISM!

At the Annual K – days festival everyone would dance to the Shmenges

  3. EDMONTON CITY COUNCIL PULLS THE PIN ON NORTHLANDS, LEAVING HORSEMEN???????

EDMONTON COUNCIL pulls 3 members off Northlands’ board, sighting conflict of interest and that Northlands is a separate entity from city, kind of a like of old couple that aren’t sleeping together but who’s financial future sits in tax payers’ hands. Maybe pull the guarantee on $20 million line of credit, to wake REID up?

FICTION FOR HORSE INDUSTRY, captain at VISION 2020 council meeting boasts about the annual approval of their 3 year business plan as the regulator of horse racing when the plan was never APPROVED for 2016! MAYOR IVESON supports the continuation of live racing at Northlands for 2 years in September then washes their hands of any Board Input at Northlands activities a month later!

PC LEADERSHIP contest has NO disclosures of PC donors until end of leadership race, with the deadline for NOV. 10 for candidates running, maybe the backstretch should light a candle at church and pray that TENILE throws her feed bucket into the race, like HRA’S lack of budget numbers and future!

HOT RUMOUR IS PLAN M, for thoroughbreds to race at CENTURY DOWNS and harness to race at ALBERTA DOWNS under new operator, at least the long delayed promise of track lighting might occur!

HOT RUMOUR is operating grants going to 33% from 28.75% to cover reward for deferred maintenance costs and to front load capital infrastructure costs. With the current BREADWINNER CENTURY DOWNS keeping the industry afloat as NORTHLANDS casino revenue has gone from 45 million/2006 to 23 million/2015(21 million 2016) with a rumoured drastic drop to $6.58 net win/hr compared to CENTURY’S rumoured $10.50 net win /hr!
