Sal says that the hockey media in Canada has absolutely no shame as every year they unabashedly beat the trade deadline and Free Agent Frenzy to death and never even acknowledge when they’re so far out to lunch on their predictions theirs would be the picks you’d cross off with an old Sharpie if they were touting horses.

Sal says that even though Mike Smith was traded to the Flames he kept all his riding assignments on Saturday.

Riversedge Racing Stables Trooper John sat off the pacesetters until the top of the stretch and took command to prevail in the Ky Alta Stakes for 3 year olds at Northlands Park for conditioner Tim Rycroft with Keishan Balgobin in the irons.  Bar No Q was out finished and held on for second. Extreme Lyra rallied late for third.

A couple of races later the betting public at Northlands Park seemed to forget that Eurico Martens  Ready Intaglio won the 2016 edition of the Ky Alta and went on to win the 2016 Canadian Derby as they let him go off at 13.65 to one. Kyle Carter sat well behind the speed duel up front, split horses with Ready Intaglio coming home down the lane and won the Spangled Jimmy – Black Type  under a drive for conditioner Amber Meyaard. Hemlock Channel was out finished and held on for second.  Hold the Giant closed late for third.

On Friday Night Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd.s Anstrum sat behind the pace saving ground along the rail, came out and swept by the leaders winning the R. K. (Red) Smith H. Black Type going away for conditioner Monica Russell with Keishan Balgobin aboard. O’ Maggi trailed and closed gamely but was no match for the winner. Misty Do It set the pace fading down the lane but was able to hold on for show money. Anstrum’s final time of 139.30 for the mile bodes well as she was .34 seconds faster than the boys in the Ky Alta.

Bar None Ranches Ltd.’ s Port Protection sat well behind the leaders saving ground along the rail took the lead approaching the quarter pole drawing away to win the John Patrick Handicap by 4 1/2 lengths for trainer Ron Grieves with Larry Munoz in the saddle. Smart Fix closed weel but was unable to get to the leader. ClassyshadesofGrey made a late move but lacked sufficient response to threaten the leaders.
