Nick and Pauline’s aptly named Spaghetti Mouse won the 2005 BC Derby, but Nick and Pauline have never won the Canadian Derby.
Unfortunately for Phil, Phil didn’t have Spaghetti Mouse in his Pick 4 ticket.
Pepino’s now occupies Nick’s old restaurant space in Vancouver.
Phil’s heard good things about Tasty Bistro in Vancouver.
Terry Jordan has never won the Canadian Derby, but we all remember True Metropolitan winning a few Stakes at Stampede Park and Northlands Park.
Spaghetti Mouse didn’t cross the Rockies for the 2005 Canadian Derby, but Peter Redekop’s Alabama Rain did and won the 2005 Canadian Derby for Lance Giesbrecht with Pedro Alvarado in the irons.
The 75th Running of the Manitoba Derby is in the record books at Assiniboia Downs.
Phil has a question:
How close to the $3,708,804 record will Century Mile come.
Does Horse Racing Alberta having a bigger and faster growing bureaucracy than the Manitoba Racing Commission count.

I have a garden. We have fresh tomatoes and strawberries. People are different here… People out in California, they grow up quicker. They have a lot of excess, and they have a lot more things than we do here in Hungary. There, they start doing makeup when they’re 13, when we would still be out in the countryside making sausage.

New York Thunder (5-2) has quite the varied resume, winning on three disparate surfaces. His last in the G2 Amsterdam was his best, making two moves on the lead, repulsing a turn challenge, then separating himself from rivals despite fast fractions and staying on his left lead until the dance was done.
21², 43², 1:07³, 1:14³ for 6½ furlongs with the chart comment eased up late is pretty quick in Phil’s book.
The Farkash clan will be rooting for the 2, but the son of Army Mule’s in tough company facing a couple of graded stake winners.

I’m looking forward to football season, having a lot of fun watching games. I’m gonna win games I shouldn’t win, I’m gonna lose games that I should win. But to me, watching games, the excitement of that, it’s like when I was a kid, I enjoy it. If it gets to a point that I don’t, I’ll quit.

Phil sent an e-mail to Clark Kent asking why DRF does not even have Century Mile or Century Downs listed in the drop down menu for track news.
DRF Track News
No response yet.
Maybe they’ll have to hire another useless bureaucrat to see if they can see DRF from their window.
Phil’s hit a number of watering holes and businesses this week and asked the same question:
Are you going to the Canadian Derby this weekend.
Not one person Phil spoke to knew what the Canadian Derby was or had heard anything about the Canadian Derby. Most didn’t even know that there was a horse race track by the airport.
PT Barnum said it best:
Without promotion, something terrible happens… nothing!
HRA promotion of horse racing has hit a ultimate low
The old days of Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal race promotions and media coverage are a long lost memory as the on track crowds disappear.
EDMONTON SUN derby article is a absolute disgrace, as a photo from a race from 2020 derby undercard is used as a page filler.

ASD hit $3.5 mil in 2022 and $3.7 mil in 2023 on Manitoba Derby Day with a bit of marketing effort. That’s totally lacking in Alberta but HRA pumps their chests like a wild turkey during mating season.
Forecast of sunny 26c Should be the only free giveaways being done by Alberta HBPA and they’re not much.
