Good place to start is Horse Racing Alberta by cleaning out Shirley McClellan and Rick LeLacheur.

The problem for senior figures like Graham is in the mirror. They are the very people Trump supporters want to drive from Washington. Their legacy of failure is the reason voters feel they could do no worse with Trump – who the New York Times called a “shady, bombastic liar” – than with the more conventional alternatives. Every time Graham or another veteran Washingtonian pipes up with another denunciation of Trump, the more determined Trump’s forces become to clean house. They’re not concerned about what happens after they burn down Washington, they just want to burn it down and worry about the rest later.

NORTHLANDS PARK 2016 THOROUGHBRED SPRING TRAINING SCHEDULE

The HBPA of Alberta is pleased to announce that Northlands will accommodate an earlier start for spring training at their Facility this year.

Horses can move into Northlands Park on Friday March 4 with the track being open for training on Sunday March 6, 2016. As usual these dates are predicated on weather permitting.

As has been the case in the past, the Long Barn will be available at a later date with the opening scheduled for April 1, 2016.

With the Thoroughbred meet commencing on May 6, we encourage members to take advantage of this earlier start to spring training so that we have as many horses as possible ready to race at the start of the race meet.

Any questions with respect to this matter can be directed to Mat Monaco @ 403-650-6448.

domenica 28 febbraio

Sal was leafing through some of Phil’s old posts for some salient smashing story ideas and come upon a revelation of how the Board at Horse Racing Alberta is made up. A representative from each of the “A” tracks, a representative from the “B” tracks, 2 representatives from ASHA (the jiggies), 1 representative from Alberta CTHS (the thoroughbred breeders), 1 representative from Alberta HBPA (the thoroughbred racers) and a few other appointees some with and some senza votes.

Sal got on the blower with a few of the guys from his old neighbourhood wise or otherwise. When they could finally utter a word through their guffaws about the foolishness of setting up a Board where the briccones get a vote they started to wonder how they could get on the Police Commission and the IRS.

Sal was thinking that no politician would ever set up an agency so teeming with conflicts and ripe for bullying and manipulation that it could act as a golden parachute pension plan for some sly opportunist.

Or would they.

Northlands Park – 2016 Stall Assignments

Appears to Sal that fratello Robertino has seen the iceberg off the starboard bow as he has no stalls at Northlands Park for 2016.

Did Sal or Phil’s e-mail address receive an e-mail from Northlands Park Racing Secretary Jason Teague about the 2016 Stall Assignments being posted.

Nope.

Did Sal or Phil’s e-mail address receive an e-mail from any other employee or manager from Northlands Park about the 2016 Stall Assignments being posted.

Nope.

Sal was leafing through Phil’s e-mail’s yesterday and the criticism of the Northlands Park racing secretary Jason Teague is well deserved.

Racing in Alberta has gone downhill since Stampede Park lost their days. Northlands is a joke right down from Management to their inept racing secretary to their horrible race caller. I used to own horses there a decade ago and I will not be back.

Paulick Report – Canada: Horse Racing Facing Uncertain Future In Alberta

Nary an e-mail to Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail from Jason Teague.

Does Jason Teague think that the communication process works by osmosis. Because he knows something it will transfer to everyone else.

Yes today’s social media works wonders in spreading the message out rapidly, but even social media needs the seeds.

Perhaps Northlands CEO Tim Reid wouldn’t be calling the horse racing industry declining if Northlands Park employees were doing their jobs of getting the information out to the people and giving the customers decent service.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives nothing from the Undertaker about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Alberta.

Sal was wondering what the Undertaker does.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives only intermittent information from the Northlands Park about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Alberta since Chris Roberts left.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives plenty of information from Theresa Sealy about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Alberta.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail was receiving only intermittent information from CTHS Alberta about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Alberta, however, the information flow has been regular over the past few months.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives plenty of information from HBPA Alberta about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Alberta.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives plenty of information from the Derby Bar & Grill about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of British Columbia.

Sal noticed that Phil or Phil’s comment e-mail receives plenty of information from  the Assiniboia Downs Insider about upcoming horse racing events and promotions in the province of Manitoba.

Ma, che sei grullo?

If only the nove repeat the information they read on www.holybull.ca through their social media channels and the good old fashioned word of mouth how many more people know about it.

Sal’s gonna take partial umbrage with Racing Enthusiast. Not about Northlands being a joke right down from Management or their inept racing secretary, but about their not so horrible race caller.

Matt Jukich may not be the best race caller in North America, but neither is he the worst and Sal’s noticed that Matt has improved immeasurably since his rookie season.

He still has tanta strada da fare, but as long as he endeavours to continue working to improve and doesn’t let the press clippings and his ego get in the way Matt has promise.

Sal hopes Matt had the chance to listen to the 2 recent callers auditioning for Trevor Denman’s old job. Their clarity, enunciation and intonation were superb, their ability to follow race patterns and communicate the flow of the race to the fans impeccable and they understood the difference between da rhine en spine and the Rain in Spain.

TDN – A ‘Men’ Among Boys in Fountain of Youth

Doug O’Neill, Nyquist’s trainer, has been equally intent on reaching the Kentucky Derby by way of Florida. He has a million reasons for that. A $1 million bonus is there for the taking if Nyquist can win the Florida Derby. He is eligible for the bonus because he was purchased by Paul Reddam as a 2-year-old at a Fasig-Tipton sale last March. The incentive is being offered for the first time to enhance the appeal of the Flordia Derby compared to other rich prep races.

“I hope they change their minds,” McLaughlin said jokingly. “I’m not really looking forward to facing him. He’s a very talented horse and so are we. But this is home for us.”

..

Once the starting gate snapped open, Mohaymen withstood early jostling around the first turn while Awesome Banner and Zulu, both venturing beyond seven furlongs for the first time, displayed their expected early speed, running one-two.

“He settled nice for me,” Alvarado said. “By the five-eighths pole, he started to get into a nice rhythm, that gear, and he started pulling on me, asking me for the next step. “

When Alvarado gave Mohaymen his cue, he blew past Zulu and widened his margin with every powerful stride until Alvarado, recognizing the massive challenge that awaits, eased him under the wire. He covered the distance in 1:42.84 on a fast track and returned $2.80 as the 2-5 favorite in a six-horse field.

“Each race he improves even more and proves that he has everything that a rider would want in a horse to point to those big races,” Alvarado said. He has been aboard since Mohaymen debuted with a half-length victory last Sept. 19 at Belmont Park before completing his 2-year-old season with successes in the Nashau and Remsen, a pair of grade II contests at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Call it reading between the lines. Call it interpretation. Call it what you will, but it is something handicappers do a thousand times a day.

I note this because on the face of it, Mohaymen’s victory Saturday in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park wouldn’t knock your socks off. His Beyer Figure of 95, which may or may not be one you can hang your hat on (more about that later), wasn’t particularly special, nor was his win margin of 2-1/4 lengths. But after I read between the lines and interpreted in my own way what I saw Mohaymen do in the Fountain of Youth, I came away very, very impressed.

ESPN – DRF – Watchmaker – Mohaymen’s performance better than it first looked

Sal found this gem in Phil’s archives:

Phil can hear the detractors warming their engines. Mohaymen will never get the distance cause his broodmare sire is Dixie Union and Dixie Union’s progeny AWD shouts sprint. Before you pounce onto that bandwagon check the AWD of American Pharoah’s broodmare sire and remember that Dixie Union’s stud career was cut short.

DIXIE UNION (1997), Black type winner, $1,233,190. Sire of 10 crops. 797 foals, 662 starters, 48 black type winners, 479 winners, $42,413,647, including Union Rags ($1,798,800, Belmont S. Top Ten Alberta Stallions
Owners of the top ten Alberta Stallions ranked by North American earnings of progeny during the 2015 calendar year received their Breed Improvement bonuses in January. Stallions had to have stood in Alberta for the entire calendar year of conception for each year’s foal crop in order to be eligible.
A number of new stallions have also arrived in Alberta in time for the 2016 breeding season. Alberta is now home to Mank, Declassify, Balmont and Omega Code. Further information about these stallions and others can be found on the Stallion Information page on the CTHS website.

The annual Night of Champions will be held at the Quartz Ballroom at the Matrix Hotel in Edmonton on Saturday, May 28th. Please make sure you save the date so you can join us in celebrating the achievements of Alberta’s top Thoroughbred racehorses, their owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys.
Nominees for this year’s Night of Champions will be posted on the C.T.H.S. website in March.

A 5-year-old son of U.S. champion turf male and Calumet Farm sire English Channel, Terry Hamiton’s Heart to Heart won by 2 1/2 lengths and covered one mile on firm turf in 1:33.52 with Julien Leparoux aboard for trainer Brian Lynch. The victory was the third straight for the bay horse, who came in off front-running wins in the Ft. Lauderdale (gr. IIT) Jan. 9 at Gulfstream last time out and the River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) Nov. 26 at Churchill Downs. The Canadian Turf marked the ninth win overall from 20 career starts for Canada’s champion 3-year-old of 2014.

About the same time that Shirley McClellan was filling a room in Nisku with cazzate the MD of Rockyview was considering an amendment to the Bylaw for the Century Downs track.

2016-02-23-Council-Agenda-47.

The purpose of this Application is to amend Bylaw C-6234-2006 (DC-109) Appendix B by replacing the existing Race Track and Entertainment Centre Master Site Development Plan (MSDP) for Sub-Cell A-1, in order to facilitate the future development of two (2) additional barns, a barn lounge building, a jockey building, and expansion of the existing racino building.

A detailed estimation of water usage, sanitary analysis, as well as updates to the Stormwater Management Report / Plan will be required at the development permit stage. Off-site infrastructure requirements will also be identified in subsequent Traffic Impact Assessment updates at each Development Permit stage as per the County’s Servicing Standards.

The Audio of the meeting has been posted at Rockyview – Council Minutes Archives but not the minutes. Suffice it to say that the motion passed.

Although the bylaw has now been amended it sounds to Sal like there’s molta strada da fare, dollars to find and fences to build before Century Downs in ready to race thoroughbreds.

The water usage problem looks to be an albatross around their neck and the sanitary, storm-water and other infrastructure will not be senza cost.

The recent rumblings from Century Downs about shareholders to protect don’t bode well for Century Downs putting much of their own funds into this project and with the uncertainty of the Northlands Park situation and the slot revenue sharing agreement don’t expect much imminent progress. Those shareholders aren’t Albertans and they have no desire to benefit anything other than their own pocketbooks so don’t expect any empathy for the plight of the thoroughbred industry in this province from them.
