A large and enthusiastic crowd greeted what may be the last opening day for thoroughbred racing at Northlands Park and showed their appreciation for no 3 1/2 furlong races by wagering $287,633 on a nine race card.

Dane Nelson gave his rookie agent an evening to remember riding 4 winners. Shannon Beauregard and Quincy Welch each had 2 wins on the evening.

Conditioner Greg Tracy maintained his pace from 2015 with 5 wins on the evening, Ron Grieves having 2 wins.

Highest Opening Day Handle in 10 Years

The $287,633  wagered on the nine race card was the highest opening day handle in a decade. Fit horses, 6 furlong races with more entries and great weather paid off.

And that is with all of the population of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas scrambling to relocate and half of the population of Edmonton and surrounding areas scrambling to help.

The damage is unimaginable. Over 80,000 people have been evacuated from Fort McMurray because of massive wildfires fuelled by high temperatures and tinder-dry forest.

People, entire families, are living in gyms, hotels, work camps and basements. This is the largest fire evacuation in Alberta’s history and with winds forecasted to switch direction and become even more intense, even more damage may be done.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate: The Red Cross has set up an emergency ‘Alberta Fires’ appeal. Click here to donate.
  • Supplies: Here’s a crowdsourced Facebook page to connect Fort McMurray residents needing items with volunteers providing them. People in Edmonton can drop off donations at Edmonton Emergency Services (10255 104 street). Biggest donation needs are diapers, baby wipes, NEW toiletries (such as soap, shampoo, tampons, toothpaste etc.) and NEW socks and underwear.
  • Volunteer: Those interested in volunteering through the regional municipality can apply here. Those in Edmonton are asked to volunteer with Edmonton Emergency Services – Please call 780-428-4422.
  • To help keep track of evacuees and where they are located, anyone forced from their homes is asked to email wildfire@mwb.ca with their name, location and confirmation they are safe.

If you need more information:

  • If you’re trying to find a loved one or need evacuation information, you can call the regional municipality at 780-762-3636 or the Red Cross at 1-888-350-6070.
  • Facebook has also activated its safety-check feature for the Fort McMurray fire, an option for those who want to reassure their family and friends that they’re okay.
  • If you need a place to stay: Northlands Expo Centre (7515 118 Ave., 780-471-7210) has housing for up to 1,300 evacuees at this point.
  • Many Alberta businesses are offering many different kinds of support. Check here for on-going details.
  • On social media follow #ymmhelp to offer or ask for help.

Families and communities are being devastated by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with all of them and we hope you as a supporter can do whatever you can to help.

Amoss said despite the recent race problems aboard Mo Tom, Lanerie is a great fit for the son of Uncle Mo  .

“He gets along with him great and also knows his nuances,” Amoss said. “That may sound like a contradiction, but he does. The thing about Mo Tom is that he has this switch; he turns it off out of the gate and relaxes, but when you turn that switch on, he goes in a hurry. I think it has surprised a lot of people. With Corey on him, he knows that when he turns that switch on, it’s go time.

“Corey also knows how long he can carry that kick, and it’s more than the average horse. Those aren’t things you can describe to a rider who has never ridden him in a race. We feel lucky to have him.

But that, Laura said, is why they work so well together. She’s not sure anyone else would be able to tolerate them and their dedication to their craft, especially this time of year.

The alarm goes off at 3:40 a.m., she said, and they get sucked into the horse-training vacuum immediately after a smooth ride in the morning dark down the Watterson Expressway to Churchill Downs. They are in bed by 8 p.m. each night, a routine that becomes tougher to maintain as family and friends roll into town for all the Derby festivities and want to take them out to dinners and parties.

“Who else would understand why I want to go to bed at 8 p.m.?” Ron said.

Louisville Courier-Journal – Greer – Whitmore trainers form a dynamic duo

Sal’s notes on the HBPA Alberta meeting Thursday, April 2016:

Northlands Park track is reported to be in the best early spring condition it has been for years.

A few safety issues with back tracking and traffic control on the track during training hours will be addressed.

Horse population is close to 2015’s. With the uncertainty in the industry and the lack of a purse increase when Century Downs came on-stream Sal says that the thoroughbred owners and trainers have shown a tremendous amount of faith in the industry.

K-days will feature a number of changes.

The fireworks will be moved further east from their present location that means they’re further from the barns.

The concerts that were on the midway will be moved into the track infield. Sal says it sounds like Vision 20/20 will be put to the test. Racing on Wednesday and Fridays during K-Days will be moved to the afternoon to accommodate the shows.

The track grandstand will be part of the midway this year.

There will be a concert held in conjunction with the Canadian Derby in 2016.

Northlands Park is tightening up barn security so carry your pass license and expect to to show it.

The holes in the pavement will be addressed with Northlands maintenance.

The satellite TV reception in the dorms will continue and now be under the auspices of HBPA Alberta.

Race dates have been agreed upon for 2016 with Northlands. There will be no thoroughbred racing in 2016 at Century Downs.

Dates for 2017 are in a state of flux as Northlands Park and Edmonton City Council have not decided what will happen with Edmonton Northlands yet.

If all goes well at Century Downs there should be some thoroughbred race dates there in 2017.

Curtis Landry announced that the Northlands Park Racing Club will be advertised and open for sale shortly.  200 members at $250.00 each. Rod Cone and Craig Smith will share the training duties for the club. Greg Tracy was instrumental in acquiring the horses for the club. Curtis has arranged a limited license for the members. It will have most features except that claiming will not be permitted. Paddock access for the group will also be controlled. Sal says thanks to Curtis Landry, Greg Tracy, Rod Cone, Craig Smith and everyone else who has put in yeoman efforts to get the 2016 Northlands Park Racing Club going.

Thanks.

  1. HRA EXPENSE ACCOUNTS VERSUS HORSEMEN PURSES

The CAPTAIN takes a FREE VEGAS – EDMONTON return on Jan 30- Feb 4/2016 for meetings at a cost of $737, Isn’t his point of hire alberta and if you work part time for 80K per year and winter south shouldn’t it be on his dime? NDP government boasts of accountability and fiscal responsibility and to add insult on page 1 he puts down Jan 9 for travel, at least it isn’t as bad as his trip to AUSTRIA/CENTURY to eat Bavarian sausages first class for $4700. That got revised and he got his travel dates incorrect also.
The entitlement mentality with its loop holes and perks must be removed as the thoroughbred racing participants bust their asses to survive with no purse increases during the time that the Captain and Tenile ran the dog and pony show.

  2. NORTHLANDS 2016 ANNUAL REPORT SHOWS TOTAL DISRESPECT FOR HORSE RACING

NORTHLANDS just released annual report under pg 5/17 under 2015 highlights does not mention CANADIAN DERBY or horse racing as a contributing factor to Northlands operations What lack of respect?

NORTHLANDS annual report under expenditures shows $59.840 million and revenue of $55.440 for a difference of $4 million and with HRA operating grant of $8.1 million for a PROFIT OF $4.1 MILLION for 2015, no matter how they stretch and bend the numbers, horse racing is PROFITABLE !

NORTHLANDS AGLC GAMING REVENUE drops pg 16/17 from $24.6 million/2014 to $23.8 million/2015 a drop of 800k, but due to Tenile’s inventive accounting their HRA OPERATING grant increases from $7.4 million/2014 to $8.1 million/2015 a increase of $700k due to a funding formula increase of 28.75%/2015 from 25.75%/2014 while the horseman’s purses took a $1.7 million haircut?

NORTHLANDS future bottom line with the loss of $3.2 million in grant revenue (rextall/cfr) along with $2 million loss in oiler/oil king parking and $ MILLIONS concert revenue should have them singing the blues to city council as they propose to cut $4 million profit in horse racing and reduce their casino slots , that by the way have dropped from $42.7 million/ 2006 to 23.7 million/2015 in AGLC gaming revenue. The bailout of NORTHLANDS financial woes will take more than a water truck it will take a lagoon to fix the mess!

NORTHLANDS request submissions of the best stories of the past 110 years of horse racing, i suggest that the horsemen for the next 110 days tell the STD management team at NORTHLANDS about their total disrespect for the horse industry and their hard working contributions to their bottom line!

NORTHLANDS retired ex president and ceo KEN KNOWLES in 2010 quietly became a board member of AGLC in October 2015, what role will he play if any in the modernization governance of horse racing or northlands horse racing future, as a past industry insider BRUCE PHELAN no longer trains race horses!

HRA seeks a operator for A TRACK operations unless it’s RIVER CREE(god knows why they want to deal with tenile) , the entire industry will be up SHITTS CREEK without a paddle as a racino license hinges on AGLC granting one with a provincial freeze on, and the last one took 10 years to complete!

HRA seeks appeal tribunal member and chairman job #1035809, after a year in limbo why bother!

ASHA releases board member meeting minutes from MARCH/2016 I’m shocked that the current harness judges (BAT TEAM) will have their performances evaluated by outside judges per TENILE , what the hell does DOUG FENSKE/SUPERVISOR do . He should be fired and join his departed MLA wife who pitched the RIVER CREE solution in HRA twitter account in December during future negotiations with northlands. The BAT team currently has 40 rulings will the thoroughbreds get a chance to evaluate the
HAY TEAM at Northlands or CAPTAIN/TENILE’S GOVERNANCE doubtful!

BILL DAVIS’S sudden passing is a tremendous loss to the harness racing industry with his numerous accomplishments. He will missed by the entire racing community!
