Conditioner Greg Tracy maintained his torrid pace at Northlands Park Saturday winning another 5 races after having one of his winners disqualified. Both Shannon Beauregard and Quincy Welch had 2 winners on Saturday.
Equibase reported a $399,005 handle at Northlands Park on Saturday as another large boisterous crowd enjoyed the sunshine, the live racing and the Kentucky Derby.
Sal says it’s time that the powers that be in thoroughbred racing right across North America woke up and realized that the 18 – 25s who come to the track have grown up with computers, the Internet, smart phones, fantasy sports leagues and social media and they learn the game very quickly. Get them to the track, give them some decent food and cheap drinks and they’ll not only be back, but they’ll tell their friends. Sal says that social media is nothing more than word of mouth on steroids and you need to generate that positive vibe for social media to work to your advantage.
Sal was wondering if the Northlands suits that were at the track on Saturday with their Vision 2020 pins in their lapels and their little notebooks noticed the size and the enthusiasm of the crowd for a sport that their CEO claims is declining.
Sal heard that the buffet at Colours has improved this year.
Sal was wondering why Horse Racing Alberta had absolutely nothing on their website about opening weekend of thoroughbred racing at Northlands Park. Guess the Undertaker was too busy.
FLASH – 2016 NORTHLANDS THOROUGHBRED RACE MEET FAST OUT OF THE BLOCKS!
Opening weekend at Northlands proved to be a tremendous success for the Thoroughbreds. Wagering on the live product for the Friday and Saturday nine (9) race cards totaled $686,638 compared to $324,224 for opening weekend in 2015. This represented an amazing year over year increase of 112%.
There were large crowds on both days especially on Saturday Kentucky Derby Day. The Colours Restaurant was “hopping” with what appears to be a marked improvement in both service and food quality.
Racing Secretary Jason Teague is to be commended on putting together 2 competitive cards of relatively full fields.
Finally our hats go off to the Thoroughbred Horsemen who had their horses Racing fit for the opening cards. The weather and excellent track conditions during spring training played a significant part in there not being one race offered under 6 furlongs.
Let’s build on this momentum for the remainder of the season!
I Malano miau!
Sal was wondering if the bridgejumper who hammered Dickie Dunn to show in the third race at Northlands Park on Saturday had to head home for a change of underwear when Dickie Dunn drifted entering the stretch and the stewards flashed the inquiry sign. Lucky for the bridgejumper that when Dickie Dunn was disqualified he still ended up being placed third and the show bet was safe.

Alberta Thoroughbred Race Club Application
Sal again says thanks to Curtis Landry for the effort he is putting into the Alberta Thoroughbred Race Club. Sal noticed the above brochure available at the bars at Northlands Park this weekend. Great work Curtis.

NORTHLANDS VISION 2020 VERSUS SAUDI VISION 2030
SAUDI GOVERNMENT announces VISION 2030 economic plan to reduce their dependence on oil and diversify its economy by canning several sheik ministers (oil) and replacing them with younger educated
advisors. NORTHLANDS VISION 2020 will it reduce it’s dependency on $19 million in government grants and try to turn a profit with the austerity and major job cuts that the council governance plan will bring?
EDMONTON COUNCIL vote to charge all homeowners for alley repairs. I hope the new vision doesn’t charge trainers by the stall in shed rows for repairing potholes that should have been covered by $75 million in HRA operating grants in the past decade and $8.1 million last year.
KATZ GROUP gets KEITH URBAN/DOLLY PARTON concerts to open up the new venue in September, a hot rumour is that NORTHLANDS with the switch to tourism grants from agriculture are looking at either K.D.LANG/CONSORT or PAUL BRANDT/CALGARY to perform during the DERBY activities.
WOODBINE introduces 3 concert stages and various activities during QUEENS PLATE to introduce different demographics to live horse racing, will Northlands wake up and smell the green grass!
ASHA BOARD on April 30 announces that 12% ALBERTA BONUS will be eliminated for rest of the year due to a shortfall in HRA purse grants and foreign simulcast revenue, after TENILE at the 2015 AGM spoke of increased purses and a rainy day fund for any revenue decreases. Boy the air sure got sucked out of any cushion from her ABACUS method budget forecasting projections.
ASHA/VP BILL ANDREW at recent AGM spoke in terms of new RACINO negotiations it was better to give in on cuts as opposed to deal duration, isn’t a annual review of the agreement as per previous deals part of negotiations as with the recent terrible fires, the whole provincial fiscal future has been changed.
KATZ/OILERS decline to give in to CFR demands and in turn sign a 5 year deal for bull riding. I hope that the HBPA digs their horns in, for any future negotiations with HRA since big change is brewing!
