“We’re up 14 percent in handle,” he said. “It’s a step in the right direction, but that’s just a start.”
Newlin hasn’t been shy about making changes since taking over. But perhaps his biggest gamble starts Friday — the first day of the three-day live meet — when a $5 admission will be charged for the first time.
“It’s the number one change that people are talking about,” he said. “I’ve even heard from some horsemen who question whether it’s the right thing, but I know that it’s something we have to do.”
Newlin said fans can’t attend any sporting event without paying admission, adding that Horsemen’s Park should have been charging fans from the first year it held a live meet.

Measured by the sheer number of miles covered, Nabokov is the most American of authors. He saw more of the United States than did Fitzgerald, Kerouac or Steinbeck, and what he saw was back-roads America: personal, intimate, ticky-tack and yet undeniably authentic. It took a Russian-born writer to awaken us to what Mark Twain knew: America is not a place; it is a road.

Sal’s sources say that the progress on a couple of interesting projects was discussed at Saturday’s CTHS Alberta meeting:
Microchipping.
AB Thbd Microchipping Project
The made in Alberta solution looks to be the simplest and safest so far. Most Canadian jurisdictions are looking at using the Alberta technology and the US Jockey Club is also looking at it.
Excellent work by CTHS Alberta and Jean Kruse.
OTTBS
The Thoroughbred Lasting Careers Society is now officially operational and will be working to develop opportunities for thoroughbreds to commence different careers when they retire from racing.
The microchipping program will aid the slaughterhouses in identifying thoroughbred horses and will aid in rescuing many thoroughbreds’
Excellent work by CTHS Alberta and Jean Kruse.
Mat Monaco and Rod Cone from HBPA Alberta have been working with Jean Kruse, Adrienne Herron, MSc PAg Traceability Systems Specialist Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Heather Matheson-Bird, Thersa Sealy and others to ensure that the microchipping process and the software support will be simple and secure for Alberta Thoroughbreds.
Anyone with any concerns or questions on the microchipping project should contact Jean Kruse or Mat Monaco.

NORTHLANDS PARK RITCHIE BROS track equipment dispersal sale has been postponed to WINTER 2017. Will RIVER CREE/CENTURY DOWNS be picking up the slightly used starting gates/safety rail/track lights/starting gate truck/water truck/grader/camera towers and harrowing equipment at scrap value since only tangible asset the tractors are leased.
NORTHLANDS PRESIDENT REID is backtracking more than the TV series MANTRACKER as ASHA posts a fall harness meet from Nov 18 – Dec 31/2016. Looks like Northlands Park is attempting to squeeze every nickel out of”money losing” live horse racing that makes at least $4 million per year per MUCKA’S abacus calculations.
TERRY GRANT is the real MANTRACKER and offers training courses, did Northlands management attend, and didn’t he use to train standardbreds in ALBERTA?
Mucka’s looking to buy shares in the company that manufactures the asbestos shoes Reid is wearing.
When will HRA start doing things in a more accountable and professional fashion.
After my comments about JACQUIE FENSKE TWEETS somehow the tweets now show HRA. Did the Undertaker scurry down and change them.
The lawyers for the other 6 interested racino parties must be licking their chops with the apparent collusion that keeps making these process unfair.
In honour of the Indy 500: Gentlemen, start your lawyers.
AS THE OVAL TURNS JUNE EDITION
HRA proclaims 7 interests in building a new A track with the complex racino strategy of River Cree with a probable blended formula separate from their existing first nation different formula and a $75 million investment. All the horse industry is looking for is the bell from a starting gate and not all the bells and whistles that they propose which would leave the thoroughbred will a place to graze but not run!
LES BUTLER hired as a consultant by RIVER CREE is a positive announcement with his vast industry knowledge, perhaps the HBPA will utilize RED MCKENZIE as a liaison with his decades of interaction with the ENOCH RESERVE and their racing heritage.
HRA CEO states were are REALLY, REALLY, HOPING to have a new racetrack for the 2018 season with a independent committee making a decision by the fall! sounds like another fantasy?
HRA use of JACQUIE FENSKE’S twits in their twitter account with the mid December’s ENOCH interested in racing with her close Tory relationship to Tenile and supervisor husband smells of collusion, like the last MITCHELL GATE a decade ago. I hope the other 6 parties get a fair and transparent shake.
HRA ACCOUNTABILITY still reeks with CAPTAINS $737 737 FLIGHT still showing different receipt dates, KEN KNOWLES former NORTHLANDS PRESIDENT shows 10 meetings for AGLC meetings at $28.78 for a total of $287.80 what a frugal way to conduct business, HRA should learn something!
MAYOR IVESON is quoted “I don’t think there is any preconceived notion that any one or all of these things (3 options) would necessarily go ahead. NORTHLANDS PRESIDENT REID speaks like it a slam dunk.
Just a thought – oil must be at $122 US a barrel for the province to be in the BLACK.
