Garden and Gun – Celebrate the Kentucky Derby

Garden and Gun – 15 Winning Kentucky Derby Recipes

Southern Living – Peanut Butter-Banana Icebox Pie

Southern Living – Tomato Sandwich

Phil has a question:

Who needs a recipe for a tomato sandwich.

Isn’t 2 slices of bread, butter (or Mayonnaise), sliced tomatoes and a touch of salt and / or pepper simple enough for the average southerner to enjoy.

Who needs a Tomato Tea Sandwich with all kinds of other crap that takes away from the taste of a farm fresh tomato.

If you add onions does it not become a tomato and onion sandwich.

If you add cucumbers does it not become a tomato and cucumber sandwich.

If you add onions and some kind of basil, parsley, mint, garlic pesto crap does it not become inedible.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Albert Einstein

At the end of the day, you can’t compete with Mother Nature. If you’ve got a great tomato, just a pinch of sea salt is all you need.

Zac Posen

The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.

Hans Hofmann

It’s difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato.

Lewis Grizzard

Simplicity is the glory of expression.

Walt Whitman

The difference between a bland tomato and great one is immense, much like the difference between a standard, sliced white bread and a crusty, aromatic sourdough.

Yotam Ottolenghi

Simple pleasures are the last healthy refuge in a complex world.

Oscar Wilde

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

Brian O’Driscoll

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Leonardo da Vinci

I don’t care what anybody says: Nothing is better than a tomato you grow. There’s something about it that’s different than a tomato you can buy. It’s a great thing.

Tom Vilsack

National Post – Hornby – Same old story as Leafs again eliminated by Boston Bruins in first round Game 7

FiveThirtyEight – Planos – Apparently The Regular Season Is Irrelevant In The NHL

Phil has a question:

Which city has the most dejected hockey fans today – Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa or Montreal where the talking ass-hats at Toronto Sports Network continually derided their teams and their efforts during the final months of the 2018-2019 NHL season or Toronto or Calgary where the talking Ass-Hats at Toronto Sports Network already had fans mapping the Stanley Cup Parade or Winnipeg where the Jets just went up in a vapour trail.

Has any one told Toronto and Calgary city councils that they need to disband their 2019 Stanley Cup Parade Committees.

Are the fans in Calgary cheering for Dougie Hamilton and the other ex-Flames traded to Carolina last summer.

Will the Cup called Stanley ever be paraded through the Park called Stanley.

Have you noticed how much better the Bruins are in the NHL playoffs when they have a coach that can count.

It leads me to wonder if there is any aspect of university education that isn’t open to self-degradation, to the ruin of the once genuine prestige that accompanied graduation from what was always referred to as an “institution of higher learning.” In many of today’s university offerings, the “higher learning” has long been jettisoned, the politics of grievance, feminism, “white privilege” and the plague of various “studies” their meretricious replacements. In reality these are not studies, but exercises in predetermined and fixed mini-ideologies, meant to ratify “identity,” under the iron laws of political correctness.
